Atlanticrockers: Yanka Nabay

When I came across Yanka Nabay and the Bubu Gang, the music was as familiar as the hair on my skin. This is the music we danced across town to, raised the dust in our dance steps and chased the devil in three day celebrations during Christmas and Pray Day to. This is the music I grew up on in that border town in Sierra Leone! And here it is, like me, across the Atlantic! It seems Yanka Nabay has introduced Brooklynites to that deep soul and dance induce-able sound from Sierra Leone. You don’t believe me, listen to either one of these videos (or both), and if you can resist moving some part of your body to the rhythm, you must be dead.

Atlanticrockers: Zaki Ibrahim

If you thought AtlanticRock refered only to those people like myself who were born in a country in Africa and now live in the US, then you might scrach your head about Zaki as an AtlanticRocker. But this has never been my intention. To me AfricanINAmerica has always included children of African immigrants. And the America part has never been United States only.

With that said, allow me to introduce to you Zaki Ibrahim, daughter of a South African father and a Swedish mother, and an all around soulful impress. Born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Zaki now calls Toronto home. And from that basecamp (with outposts all over the world), she blends some of the most popular sounds of recent years into an eclectic sounds that is just too cool to describe, let alone label. It’s Neo-Soul, it’s Hip Hop, it’s House, it everything that grips the ears and moves the spirit…to dance! Definitely one to look out for.

AtlanticRockers: Wanlov the Kubolor

Wanlove the Kubolor aka Emanual Owusu Bonsu is a Ghanian artist born in Romania, raised in Ghana and based in the US. He is sometimes thought of as a reggae artist, sometimes as a hip hop artist, sometimes as an Afrobeat or Highlife artist. I think of him as an African artist. He is a breath of fresh air in my generation’s facination with adopting foreign style of music without owning it. In other word, this brother is as unique as they come. You want to check him out. He is doing something old and new with the Ghanian pidgin.
